Interview with Slopestyle Pro Tom Isted

Unfortunately, Tom Isted had a crash a few days ago and is now waiting for surgery on his collarbone. To help keep his spirits up—and to keep boredom at bay—we asked him to answer a few questions for the First Degree community. If you’re not familiar with Tom Isted, he began his journey riding BMX at local skateparks in Cornwall, UK. Eventually, he made the switch to mountain biking and has since become one of the world’s top freeride athletes, competing at the highest level in the FMB World Tour, at events like Crankworx, and Red Bull Joyride.

Q

Hey Tom, how’s it going? Thank you for taking your time to answer some of our questions for the First Degree community. What are you up to at the moment?

A

Currently waiting for surgery on my collarbone then I’ll be full forced on getting back to shredding.

Q

When was the first time you heard about FIRST DEGREE and how and why did you decide to team up with us?

A

The first time I saw FIRST DEGREE was via Gabriel Wibmer and it must have been 2023 and after looking around and speaking to Griffin Paulson about the shoe I thought it would a good idea to get in touch.

Q

Which shoe model is your favourite one and why?

A

It’s a mix of the Arcade and the Highwheel 2.0. For trail bikes and bike park stuff I’m all about the Arcade and for slopestyle Highwheel 2.0 for extra support.

Q

What is your favourite spot in the world to ride your bike and is there anywhere you haven’t been, but really want to go?

A

Queenstown, New Zealand – it’s got everything you could ever want in the world of MTB.

Q

Do you have a secret ritual before a contest or lucky charms that you bring?

A

No not really, just a good breakfast always gets you started in the right way.

Q

If you listen to music while riding what is your absolute favorite song?

A

I don’t listen to music but I’m a country fan.

Q

What's the most unnecessary (but coolest) thing you’ve ever put on your bike?

A

Electric gears.

Q

What was your gnarliest crash or most serious injury on the bike?

A

I crashed a double flip on a BMX and broke my back.

Q

If you wouldn’t be a mountain biker what would you do in life?

A

Still riding BMX or golf.

Q

Would you rather ride for a week without brakes or without a saddle?

A

Saddle – I’m stood up most of the time anyway.

Q

What was the weirdest/funniest thing that you ever saw while being out on the bike?

A

Rode past a couple having a grown-up cuddle in the woods.

Thanks for taking your time, Tom – and all the best for your recovery!
